Visions of Frank (2005) Preface to Visions of Frank by Jim Woodring
The world shown in the Frank comics is not imaginary. I didn't create it. I didn't discover it. I am only able to show a little bit of it in my comics, and I am only able to show that little bit in a very crude and incomplete way. It is hard to find, hard to get in. The path must be made straight so you can always see where you came from. The sticky moods must find refreshment in your heart and gather there. Sometimes I want to go to the Unifactor and sometimes I am afraid I must go there. I really, really do not want to see the two-mouthed fear cow. I do not want to be glory-poisoned, or brain-looted, or lathed. But I do want to see the field of jivas and the eyepool, and that walled city. And I guess I would like to meet Frank, though I have no idea what I would say to him. There is so much I haven't seen; nearly all of it. So show me, please. Interpret those elusive textures, capture that waning light, bring us to those distant temples. Show me how those things move, let me hear what sounds they make. I want to see what you see. |
